merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily...
I just watched The eternal sunshine of the spotless mind and I really, really liked it. One of these days I'm really going to make a list of the best films I watch every year, and this is a shoo-in for one of the top spots for 2004, I guarantee it. As a movie directed by a well-known and talented music video director, it certainly was worthy to be directed by a well-known and talented music video director. It feels like a music video (that said, the video culled from it by the Polyphonic Spree is brilliant in its own right) even while the score/soundtrack is near silent and almost absent.
"MTV-style editing" was for a long time a derogatory phrase. This is an MTV-style masterpiece and would serve well to begin the ultimate redemption of the phrase (as it is now on standby, I believe) and its practice.
I realize I'm gushing.
I just really, really liked this movie. I want to have written it. I want to have directed it. I want to have been on the sets, particularly the forced perspective ones. It was just brilliant.

I agree. This flick took me completely by surprise. Many folks asked me if I'd seen it, so I think it moved many people. When Sandler did Punch Drunk Love ( his art film), it seemed to alienate his fans. Even though this film was an extreme departure of anything Jim ever did, I think in the long run, it won everybody over. Slam dunk!
Hmm. I didn't like it as much as everyone else I guess. Maybe it's because I really hated watching a film about people who have a really crappy relationship.
Also, it reminded me a WHOLE LOT of someone and a crappy relationship I once had. It was kind of creepy for me.
But, well done anyway. I really like Elijah Wood, and was impressed by Jim Carey.
My standard response for customers who ask me if I've seen a movie on opening weekend is: "no, it just opened this weekend." Eternal Sunshine is the only movie I ever went in early and saw before my shift on opening day. I was that excited for it to come out and was not disappointed.
